Student Post Comments1

I read Nichole’s post from ESCHS, NYC on Youth Voices. I was impressed with the level of emotion in her writing. Her image and the quotes she used showed an unbelievable understanding of the power of words. The way she used her quotes to prompt the rest of her writing was insightful. Since I am struggling with sentence structure in my own writing, I noticed how she has almost mastered this in her writing. I had a hard time seeing her as a high school student. Her words showed a high level of maturity.

When I read the comments to Nichole, I was able to see high school writers. I felt that the first two comments were writers who could respond to Nichole on her writing level. Some of the others wanted to comment, but they were too immature, as writers, to accomplish what they wanted to say. I felt that they were worried about what others would think. I don’t think that the comments were helpful for Nichole as a writer and only a little helpful to her as a person. I think that these responses would be hard for Nichole to use; however, she seems to be beyond the high school level so it may not matter to her.

Blogging and Education2

I really enjoyed the end of the article titled Education Blogging . The last few paragraphs finally grabbed me. The statement that a blogger is a reader and then a responder really struck me. I’m interested in the fact that blogs can help students read the blogs of other students and then make comments. I would like to use blogging as a way to help my students pick writing topics.

I think that students need to realize that they can easily become writers. I like how blogs can help create ideas for writers. I laughed about the student who commented that she watched her spelling, because other people might read her blog. I would hope she would watch her spelling with her teacher more than on a blog. I also think that it is important to work with current technology. If the students know how to do it, the teachers should try to keep up with them. I don’t know how easy that is, but I want to try. I also think that the students will be very interested in the fact that their teacher is able to understand the technology that they use.

I also liked the list of ideas about why blogging is important that came from our first article Rationale for Educational Blogging. I think that these ideas would be useful to have when talking to other teachers about why blogging can be useful in the classroom.

My first blogging experience has been interesting. If I was currently teaching, I would use blogging as a way to generate ideas. I liked C. Sloan’s idea of taking a seed sentence from their writing to complete a written assignment. I had never heard that reference before.
